Summer in Pemberton 2011
I took these last year, before I had a blog but I really love these pictures. They were taken at a friend’s wedding a couple weeks before we got married and the memory is suffused with so much excitement and love and such anticipation. I’ll put more wedding pics on here later on but I thought these were appropriate because this is the kind of weather we’ve been having here in Deep Cove, BC. It is such a relief to finally see some unrelentingly sunny days!

Who’s Got the Umbrella?
I’ve taken pictures of this sculpture before, but I have developed a bit of an obsession with it recently. I have to admit that there are very few public art sculptures around here that I appreciate. I’ll probably step on a few toes here, but there has to be an element of beauty or appeal (even if dark or menacing) in a work of art, and it seems that a lot of it ends up being big and ugly. But “Who’s got the umbrella?” by Greg Kawczynski ca/gregevakawczynski/gallery/greg___ceramics/1/greg___monster is a sensitive sculpture, full of life and gentle humour. The woman is my favorite, with her full lips that seem to be on the point of laughter, but maybe I’ll put another post up with a few pictures of the man at a later date.
I love how the two people stare pensively at one another, that question hanging eternally between them.

Nevada's Legal Brothels are Coercive Too
It was an honor to participate in a New York Times “Room for Debate” on Prostitution alongside Rachel Lloyd, Chika Unigwe, Max Waltman, Norma Ramos & Martha Nussbaum.
Well-meaning people who’ve never been commercially sexually exploited often think that legal brothels will protect the women in prostitution from pimps and violent johns. They are mistaken.

Mud Flats
I don’t know how I never went to the mud flats at the Maplewood Conservation Area before. It’s a five minute drive from where we live and it is peaceful and alive with a host of different birds. I’m no birder, but we managed to see a few. What we didn’t see we certainly heard, though. I don’t have a great camera for taking pictures of birds unfortunately, but I snapped a couple pictures of some interesting flowers. My favorite flower find was this little pink pine flower. I didn’t even know pine trees flowered!:D Does anyone know what kind of pine tree this is? I looked it up and the closest I got was a Shore Pine, but it doesn’t look quite right…..
